Will County must balance growing economic development with quality of life, Walsh says in state of the county

Author: Editor

Will County continues to “prosper” and its future is “very bright,” said County Executive Larry Walsh in the opening of his annual state of the county address Thursday.

But the county must also “actively prepare for our future and act responsibly as we face the challenges of growth,” he said.

Walsh recited a litany of building projects the county has tackled in the past year – the new $33 million Public Safety Complex that opened in January, the construction of the $210 million courthouse now underway in downtown Joliet, and the new health department facility, which will soon begin to replace a 100-year-old structure.

County Executive Larry Walsh gives annual State of the County address

Author: Editor

Will County is moving on with the “largest capital campaign in our 182-year history,” County Executive Larry Walsh said in his State of the County address Thursday.

In his upbeat outlook on county government, Walsh outlined big projects such as the new courthouse, pointed to a growing economy and job market, and discussed the challenges of crowded highways and opioid abuse.

The annual speech is a prelude to the county executive’s budget recommendations, which will be presented in September.

Revoke my security clearance, too, Mr. President

Author: Editor

William H. McRaven, a retired Navy admiral, was commander of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command from 2011 to 2014. He oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Dear Mr. President:

Former CIA director John Brennan, whose security clearance you revoked on Wednesday, is one of the finest public servants I have ever known. Few Americans have done more to protect this country than John. He is a man of unparalleled integrity, whose honesty and character have never been in question, except by those who don’t know him.

Editorial: In midst of assaults, we must defend principles of First Amendment

Author: Editor

Today, the Daily Herald editorial board joins more than 200 similar boards at newspapers across the country in a cause we've been championing for years -- the protection of America's free press against an unprecedented assault from the highest office of the nation's government.

Consider this description from one of our first editorials on the topic in December 2016: "Why we're saying (that the press is under assault) -- why it needs to be said, why it needs to be shouted unapologetically -- is because it's dangerous.

"It undermines our democracy.

"It allows those in power to say, 'Ignore the facts no matter what the facts may be.'
