According to the South Suburban Airport website, the state began purchasing land in 2001, and to date bought 4,160 acres for $87.3 million in what it considers the inaugural footprint, plus an additional 304 acres as hardship and protective parcels for $8.2 million.
In June 2014, the state purchased the 288-acre Bult Field with its 5,000-foot runway on Kedzie Avenue in Monee for $34 million, which was within the footprint established for a 5,800-acre airport. At that time, Gov. Pat Quinn said he would meet with private investors to create a plan for its development.
While waiting for the state to take action, landowners have been unable to sell their land or have held off on making improvements.
