Durbin tells top Democrats he'll run again in 2014

Durbin's re-election bid alleviates concerns from Democrats nationally and in Illinois that the 68-year-old lawmaker would step down from the seat previously held by his mentor, the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon.

This week, Carl Levin, the 78-year-old Michigan senator who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, became the fourth Democratic senator to announce retirement plans in the current cycle.

Durbin was unavailable for comment Friday. One source close to the senator said Durbin was not ready to publicly announce his re-election bid, though some leading Democrats have been informed of his decision.
