Illinois chief justice Tom Kilbride talks to students at JJC

His parents were not happy about his “academic sabbatical.” But the academic time out led him to work with a group, led by activist Cesar Chavez, that was fighting for migrant farm worker rights. He saw how lawyers were able to help the workers get access to toilets, decent wages and better working conditions.

“That’s what spurred me on to go get a law degree ...,” he told Joliet Junior College students on Wednesday as a guest speaker during this year’s final installment of the school’s Business Seminar Series.

During a question-and-answer session with students, Kilbride, who lives in Rock Island and was elected to the Supreme Court in 2000, stressed how those early experiences with farm workers led him to a career championing the importance of an accessible court system.
