Naperville-area women say work still needed for Illinois passage of Equal Rights Amendment

The founder of Act Connect Engage, George lobbied for the passage of the amendment at the state Capitol on Tuesday with members of the League of Women Voters Naperville, the Naperville chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Will County chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Ratification of the ERA in Illinois was one of Laura Welch’s goals when she founded the Will County NOW chapter after the November 2016 election. The group’s president sees Wednesday’s vote as a move in that direction.

“We are ecstatic that our local legislators believe that the time is now for women to be equal under our U.S. Constitution,” Welch said. “There is simply no reason for a no vote and we are thrilled that senators Connelly, (John) Curran (R-Woodridge), (Jennifer) Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) and 40 other state senators agree. Now on to the House of Representatives.”

Michelle Fadeley, president of Illinois NOW, praised the senators for looking at the ERA issue as a nonpartisan issue. She added that she believes Tuesday’s ERA lobby day in Springfield definitely helped.
