Lauren Underwood embraces progressive label in faceoff against U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren

The Democratic challenger lamented the high cost of health care and prescription drugs, highlighted “the tremendous inequality of the gender pay gap,” backed the decriminalization of marijuana and said high local taxes pay for top-notch schools.

“I’m progressive because I support the idea that all Americans should have affordable health care services,” said Underwood, who received more votes in the March Democratic primary than six men combined. “I’m progressive because I recognize that climate change is real and that we need to have solutions that would stem the impact of climate change. And I’m progressive because I believe that all Americans should be paid a fair wage for their work.” 

It is a platform that may resonate with a younger, more liberal crowd. But conservative voters in the suburbs and rural areas who have been the backbone of the sprawling 14th Congressional District have reliably delivered election wins for Hultgren since he was first elected in 2010.
