After cocaine became trendy and sharing needles became scary in the 1980s, heroin’s deadly effects were “forgotten” by society as it faded to the fringes. A year with more than one heroin death would’ve been unusual in the 1990s.
But about 15 years ago the problem started growing almost exponentially. Will County had five deaths in 2000. Fifteen in 2005. Twenty-six in 2010. Thirty in 2011, and 53 in 2012.
The median age of heroin victims has dropped as well, which concerns lawmakers across the state. Last week Illinois Senate President John Cullerton appointed Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood) to a new committee that will try to find solutions.
