Remap group pulls plug after judge's ruling

“We have concluded that we are not going to proceed in this election cycle,” said Deborah Harrington, the group’s chair. “Instead, we will put the lessons learned in this campaign and from the judge’s ruling to good use.”

The court ruling also removed from the ballot, at least for now, a term-limit proposal backed by Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner. The term-limits group contended the decision was politically influenced and said it would appeal Mikva’s ruling, a case that could be heard next by the Illinois Supreme Court.

While the term limits push continues, voter-driven redistricting reform will have to wait. The bipartisan maps group raised nearly $3 million in its two-year effort to try to wrest from lawmakers the partisan-influenced process of redrawing General Assembly boundaries following the every-decade federal census. State records show the group spent nearly $1.7 million through mid-April.
