Executive Larry Walsh cites collaboration as key to Will County's successes

Author: Editor

Collaboration and compromise have been the keys to Will County's many successes in the past year, said Executive Larry Walsh in his State of the County speech Thursday morning.

The county's many achievements — its strong financial health, current building projects and capital improvement plan, new businesses, like Amazon's five facilities, and thousands of new jobs — were made possible by working together with the county board and elected officials throughout the county, in a "disciplined approach to governing," the Elwood Democrat said.

Will County also has been recognized for ending veteran homelessness, remodeling its Sunny Hill Nursing Home, and battling the heroin epidemic, he said.

Will County sees drop in heroin deaths year-over-year

Author: Editor

Will County's efforts to fight the heroin epidemic may be paying off, as fewer opioid-related deaths have occurred so far this year, compared to last year, according to the county's director of substance abuse initiatives.

Kathleen Burke's figures indicated there were 35 opioid-related deaths in the first six months of this year, compared to nearly 50 in the same period last year, she told the county's Public Health and Safety Committee Thursday morning.

Burke said she believes the reduction is because of the use of the opioid-antidote Naloxone by all first responders in the county. She has trained several police and fire departments in how to use this nasal spray to save the life of someone who has overdosed and is now training those who live and work with addicts.

Co. Executive Walsh credits compromise for Will County's accomplishments

Author: Editor

In his 11th-annual State of the County address Thursday, Will County Executive Larry Walsh said the key to the county's success has been compromise and cooperation.

As he highlighted the "significant accomplishments" of the past year and the "exciting work" that lies ahead, Walsh stressed, "When we work together we can achieve great things."

The third-term Democratic leader has worked with a Republican-majority board on a $275 million effort to replace aging county facilities and, "despite challenges," has partnered with state and federal agencies on road work and expanded services to residents.
