Author: Editor

The Illinois Department of Transportation has purchased Bult Field – a general aviation airport near Monee and a key component of the state’s overall plan to develop the South Suburban Airport – for $34 million.

The transaction covers 288 acres, including the airport’s 5,000-foot runway, taxiway, hangars and terminal, as well as additional farmland surrounding the airfield near Monee.

“This acquisition marks a defining milestone for the South Suburban Airport,” Susan R. Shea, IDOT’s director of aeronautics, said in a news release on the acquisition. “The Bults are true aviation enthusiasts who built one of the finest general aviation airports in the country. This ownership transition will be as seamless as possible for airport users.”

Remap group pulls plug after judge's ruling

Author: Editor

A group that mounted a $3 million effort to ask voters this fall to take politics out of the redrawing of legislative boundaries dropped its effort Friday, hours after a Cook County judge tossed the proposed constitutional amendment from the Nov. 4 ballot.

Judge Mary Mikva’s ruling proved to be the death blow to the drive by the Yes for Independent Maps organization, which already had been under pressure to prove to the State Board of Elections that it had obtained nearly 300,000 valid signatures from voters to secure a fall ballot spot.

Author: Editor

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Thursday he once put in a good word to help win pension business in his state for Bruce Rauner's private equity firm after Rauner donated $300,000 to Rendell's 2002 campaign.

The comments shed new light on a recurring campaign issue for Rauner, the Republican nominee in the governor's race this November, who has repeatedly accused Illinois politicians of creating a culture where campaign cash buys influence and skews policy.

Rep. Foster wants change in immigrant detention policy

Author: Editor

A Homeland Security mandate that requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain thousands of people a day costs a fortune and is holding up immigration reform, U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said Saturday.

The mandate, known as the detention bed quota, requires ICE to detain 34,000 people each day at a cost of $159 a person, Foster said. The bill to taxpayers runs $5.5 million a day or about $2 billion a year.
