Will County and RTA officials praise "Will-Ride"

Author: Editor

Will County and Regional Transportation Authority officials on Friday lauded the success of a transportation program for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

The “Will-Ride” program serves an average of 1,000 riders a month in eastern Will County and county officials are hoping the program will expand to other areas besides the seven townships it currently serves. The program was launched in 2013 after years of research into the potential need for the service in Will County.

“We’re celebrating that we have seven townships working together and partnering and we have many more that are on the way hopefully and are going to join us soon,” said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the Will County Executive office.

Transportation woes, strengths highlighted in State of the County address

Author: Editor

As Will County grows as “a major player in the global marketplace,” transportation remains one of the area’s greatest assets – and one of its greatest challenges, County Executive Larry Walsh said Thursday.

“A massive increase in global trade has increased freight traffic in Will County, has brought new economic opportunities and, at the same time, created some local infrastructure challenges,” Walsh told members of the Will County Board during Thursday’s annual State of the County address.

“Our residents have experienced the frustrations of traffic congestion,” he added. “But we must remember the incredible benefits of this growth, including more jobs and more consumers in Will County.”

Will County’s jobless rate down, job growth rising

Author: Editor

Will County is improving on all fronts – including jobless rates, job growth and business investments.

That was the message from John Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development, last week as he presented the nonprofit’s mid-year report to members of the Will County Board’s Executive Committee.

Experiencing an increase of 3.5 percent in job growth, Will County saw three times the increase Illinois did between June 2013 and June 2014, according to the CED report. Will also surpassed job growth in Cook and DuPage counties.

Pace adds additional ‘Bus on Shoulder’ routes on Interstate 55

Author: Editor

Heading into work Monday, Pace riders who commute to downtown Chicago may notice fewer stops – and a quicker commute.

To bring faster times and more direct services, Pace has split its Route 855 into three different routes, with No. 855 starting in Plainfield, No. 851 starting in South Bolingbrook and No. 850 starting in North Bolingbrook.

A ridership increase along Route 755 also led Pace officials to increase services and make slight schedule adjustments. Route 755, which starts in Plainfield, once ended at University of Chicago/Medical District, but now ends at Chicago’s Union Station.

I-55 construction in Channahon Township nearing completion

Author: Editor

Bridge work on Interstate 55 near Channahon — marred with seven fatalities and more than 100 accidents over the course of two construction seasons — will likely wrap up next week.

Illinois Department of Transportation crews could complete repairs as early as next week, but the reopening of lanes won't start until the week of Aug. 25, state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said Tuesday.

Labor Day is still considered the target completion date, but IDOT officials are working to complete the work “as soon as possible” and reopen lanes prior to the holiday weekend, IDOT spokeswoman Paris Ervin said in an email.
