The Illinois Department of Transportation has purchased Bult Field – a general aviation airport near Monee and a key component of the state’s overall plan to develop the South Suburban Airport – for $34 million.
The transaction covers 288 acres, including the airport’s 5,000-foot runway, taxiway, hangars and terminal, as well as additional farmland surrounding the airfield near Monee.
“This acquisition marks a defining milestone for the South Suburban Airport,” Susan R. Shea, IDOT’s director of aeronautics, said in a news release on the acquisition. “The Bults are true aviation enthusiasts who built one of the finest general aviation airports in the country. This ownership transition will be as seamless as possible for airport users.”

Will County Board Speaker Herbert Brooks Jr., D-Joliet, thinks a south suburban airport will create much-needed jobs as well as make air travel more convenient to those living in the area.
“I can’t wait to buy my first ticket,” Brooks said.
The proposed construction of the south suburban airport near Peotone is one of the top issues in the 2014 state legislative agenda the Will County Board recently approved. Brooks said the board “as a whole” supports the construction of the south suburban airport.

The proposed South Suburban Airport will generate zero property tax revenue, so Will County should act quickly to make sure it gets some revenue from the project that’s now under state control, according to two consultants hired by the county.
“The county should start engaging now to have input in the process,” said Aaron Quick, one of the consultants hired by the county to study a new law that grants control of the airport to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The state can move forward with a plan to condemn land in the footprint of the proposed South Suburban Airport, a Will County judge ruled Friday.
Attorneys for the Barbour family, who own land in the planned airport’s footprint, had filed a motion in Will County Circuit Court to dismiss a condemnation lawsuit filed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Air traffic control towers could be shut down at nine Illinois airports, including the Aurora Airport, DuPage Airport and the Waukegan Regional Airport in the Chicago suburbs, if no deal is reached in Washington to avert federal spending cuts scheduled to take effect Friday.
In preparation for cuts that would squeeze many government agencies, the Federal Aviation Administration is making plans to eliminate $600 million in spending for the rest of the fiscal year, leading transportation officials to warn of a multitude of travel disruptions.
