Will County takes first step toward new courthouse

Will County is taking a step that puts it on a “long journey” toward building a new courthouse, said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for County Executive Larry Walsh.

“This is the first step in many,” said Palmer, one of the architects of a master plan that deals with the county’s long-term space crunch.

Quest for new courthouse heats up in Will County

Will County’s judicial branch has taken a step that could ultimately force the county board to build a new courthouse.

Chief Circuit Court Judge Richard Schoenstedt and 15 other judges approved a rule change July 24 that allows for the creation of a court facilities committee to study courthouse problems. For years, chief judges have complained that the current building, 14 W. Jefferson St., which opened in the late 1960s, is overcrowded and outdated.

Reopen Chicago Street or preserve courthouse parking?

Ray Wesley wishes more traffic would zoom by the Red Goose Cafe that she and her husband, John, opened on the northeast corner of Jefferson and Chicago streets 16 months ago.

So do city of Joliet officials.

And there’s an easy fix for the problem. All the city has to do is get the county to reopen Chicago Street immediately east of the Will County Courthouse so traffic heading north from Interstate 80 could flow all the way through the downtown. That would be a godsend, Wesley said.
