Illiana toll road clears hurdle

Author: Editor

In a major victory for Gov. Pat Quinn, a key regional planning committee has approved his controversial proposal for a new $1.3 billion toll road that would serve primarily as a trucking corridor linking interstates in Illinois and Indiana.

The Illiana Corridor got the green light Thursday from the Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Committee, which by federal law must sign off on major transportation projects.

At a crossroads: State Transportation Director says regional planning staff used ‘simplistic and misleading analysis’ in negative review of Illiana

Author: Editor

Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider shot back at a regional planning group’s staff report challenging plans for the Illiana Tollway.

As expected, staff for the Chicago Metropolitan Agency on Planning released a detailed report Sept. 26 saying the proposed 50-mile-long road planned from Interstate 55 near Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana should not be included in federal transportation funding.

Staff said the project does not fit in to the region’s long-term transportation plan and disagrees with cost estimates, as well as employment and economic development forecasts.

Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., other legislators to hold press conference in Chicago on Illiana Expressway

Author: Editor

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr. (D-Elwood) will join with other south suburban legislators who support the construction of the Illiana Expressway at a press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 to protest the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s (CMAP) recent analysis that raises points of opposition to the planning and construction of the Illiana Expressway.

“The most recent analysis conducted by CMAP appears to be aimed at holding up a project, due to the fact that in order to be eligible for federal grants that the project is depending on, we need to get CMAP back on board with the original proposal they agreed on,” Walsh said.
