Mr. President, on behalf of an ungrateful nation, thank you

Author: Editor

I’ve never written a column like this. Readers rarely believe it, but I am not on any political team. Generosity toward the high and mighty isn’t among my few virtues. But this needs to be said: Americans are lucky to have Barack Obama as president and we should wake up and appreciate it while we can.

President Obama will go down in history as an extraordinary president, probably a great one. He will have done this in era that doesn’t aggrandize leaders and presidents, but shrinks them. All presidents have had profound opposition, vicious enemies and colossal failures. A few were beloved and others deeply respected in their day, but none in the modern era and certainly not Obama.

U.S. Economy Adds 223,000 Jobs; Unemployment at 5.3%

Author: Editor

Not too hot, not too cold. But not, alas, just right.

The economy added a healthy 223,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported Thursday, but with other indicators showing wages flat and many Americans remaining on the sidelines, the overall economic picture for workers was not nearly as bright.

Although the unemployment rate fell to 5.3 percent, the lowest in seven years, that was driven largely by an exodus from the work force, rather than more people finding jobs. Moreover, the strong payroll gains for April and May, which had led many analysts to conclude that the economy might finally be gaining momentum, were revised downward by 60,000 jobs.

Get used to President Obama's swagger

Author: Editor

Here's some practical advice to those who didn't like President Barack Obama's swagger during his recent State of the Union address: Get used to it.

Economic indicators suggest he's going to have even more to crow about in the months to come.

Obama taunted his Republican opponents at his State of the Union address, reminding them in an off-the-cuff remark that he won both of his presidential runs and boasting about the suddenly booming economy: "At every step, we were told our goals were misguided or too ambitious; that we would crush jobs and explode deficits. Instead, we've seen the fastest economic growth in over a decade, our deficits cut by two-thirds, a stock market that has doubled and health care inflation at its lowest rate in 50 years. This is good news, people."

Obama: 8 million have signed up for health care

Author: Editor

President Obama announced Thursday that 8 million people have signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, calling the feat a success story that Democrats should "forcefully defend and be proud of" in the face of Republican election-year attacks on the law.

The enrollment figure, revised upward from the 7.5 million signups that the administration had announced earlier this month, renewed hopes at the White House that Democrats will be able to overcome the initial rocky rollout of the health law in the fall as they battle to maintain control of the Senate in the midterms this fall.

"This thing is working," Obama said at an afternoon news conference. Of the GOP, he added: "They said no one would sign up. They were wrong about that. They are wrong to try to repeal a law that is working."

Obamacare horror stories tough to come by, so here's a heartbreaker

Author: Editor

Obamacare is destroying the lives of hardworking, patriotic Americans. People on the television have assured me of that, and the supporting facts are pretty clearly laid out in the 579 emails my grandmother just forwarded to me.

But for some reason it's proving difficult to find these destroyed-life, hardworking, patriotic Americans.

It seems like every time a Republican lawmaker — or a conservative group like Americans for Prosperity — brings up a person suffering under the yoke of Obamacare, the fact-obsessed lamestream media swoop in and show that the person's situation is more nuanced and less suffering-ish.
