Joliet inspector general reviewing McFarland envelope matter

Author: Editor

The Joliet inspector general has been looking into what action the city can take concerning Councilman Jim McFarland’s use of city envelopes for political purposes.

The state’s attorney’s office last month said it would not pursue criminal charges in the matter, which was referred to it by the city in November.

McFarland has run into new legal problems since then after being charged with driving under the influence in connection with an incident July 10. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test when stopped at 2:26 a.m. on Interstate 80 in the New Lenox area, state police said.

City of Joliet looks into Councilman McFarland mailings

Author: Editor

The City of Joliet is conducting an internal investigation into Councilman Jim McFarland's use of city envelopes for possible political purposes.

McFarland acknowledged using City of Joliet envelopes produced at City Hall to promote a Facebook page he developed for lost pets and to announce a pancake breakfast for veterans being held Sunday.

He said he "inadvertently" used about 150 envelopes in the two mailings and will pay for the cost of the envelopes.

Dan Vera replaces James Smith as chairman of Rialto board

Author: Editor

James Smith, the embattled chairman of the Rialto Square Theatre board during the marquee crisis, was replaced in an election of officers on Wednesday.

The new chairman is Dan Vera, who had been vice chairman and has been taking an increasingly bigger role on the board since the marquee issue started.

The marquee issue arose again Wednesday as the board learned that it will cost about $40,000 to update the existing sign. The board voted to seek bids on auxiliary work needed to update the sign without making a final decision on whether to spend the $40,000.
