Obama: 8 million have signed up for health care

Author: Editor

President Obama announced Thursday that 8 million people have signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, calling the feat a success story that Democrats should "forcefully defend and be proud of" in the face of Republican election-year attacks on the law.

The enrollment figure, revised upward from the 7.5 million signups that the administration had announced earlier this month, renewed hopes at the White House that Democrats will be able to overcome the initial rocky rollout of the health law in the fall as they battle to maintain control of the Senate in the midterms this fall.

"This thing is working," Obama said at an afternoon news conference. Of the GOP, he added: "They said no one would sign up. They were wrong about that. They are wrong to try to repeal a law that is working."

Obamacare horror stories tough to come by, so here's a heartbreaker

Author: Editor

Obamacare is destroying the lives of hardworking, patriotic Americans. People on the television have assured me of that, and the supporting facts are pretty clearly laid out in the 579 emails my grandmother just forwarded to me.

But for some reason it's proving difficult to find these destroyed-life, hardworking, patriotic Americans.

It seems like every time a Republican lawmaker — or a conservative group like Americans for Prosperity — brings up a person suffering under the yoke of Obamacare, the fact-obsessed lamestream media swoop in and show that the person's situation is more nuanced and less suffering-ish.

Will County helps enroll 940 in Obamacare

Author: Editor

Will County officials helped enroll 940 residents into the new federal health insurance system known as Obamacare in recent months, officials said.

The county health department's part in helping residents go online and choose a new health care plan was made possible by two grants that funded six counselors who worked to make the enrollment process run more smoothly, according to health department spokesman Vic Reato.

The 940 residents enrolled from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 the number likely would have been higher if not for the fact that county employees were on strike for three weeks late last year, Reato said.

Health costs rise 3% for Chicago employers

Increase lowest in 11 years, but burden shifting to employees

Author: Editor

Health insurance costs for large employers in Chicago rose 3 percent in 2013, the lowest increase in five years, according to data released Thursday by benefits consultant Aon Hewitt.

The cost of providing coverage per employee this year in Chicago was $10,753, up from $10,434 in 2012 and $9,871 in 2011, the Lincolnshire company found in its latest analysis, which compares cost and benefit data for 516 large U.S. employers that account for $61.2 billion in annual health care spending.

Employers, however, pushed a larger percentage of the burden on to their workers, whose total health care costs jumped 9 percent in 2013, the data show.
