Tie-breaking power puts Democrats in majority

Author: Editor
If the Will County Board gets into a tie vote on an issue, the Democratic county executive will be able to cast the tie-breaking vote, according to an opinion issued by the state’s attorney Wednesday.

The issue came up recently after the board ended up with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans after the November election, but Democrat Larry Walsh as county executive gives his party the edge.

Scott Pyles, chairman of the Will County Democratic Party, agreed with that. He likened the situation to the U.S. Senate — when the Senate is split 50-50, the vice president is the tie-breaker and his party gets to elect a majority leader, Pyles explained.

Reed Bible win ushers in new era for Will County Democrats

Author: Editor

Democrat Reed Bible’s Will County Board victory after Tuesday’s final vote count will usher in a new era of politics in Will County with Democrats more in charge than they have been in 32 years.

Bible was a little in shock and Republican incumbent John Argoudelis was on the verge of tears after the final total showed Bible won the hotly contested District 5 race.

Democrats will have the county board majority for the first time since 1980. The board is tied at 13-13 for each party, but Will County Exective Larry Walsh, a Democrat, can cast tie-breaking votes, which gives Democrats the edge.

Will County Board Dems choose Brooks as leader

Author: Editor
Will County Board Democrats unanimously selected Herbert Brooks Jr. as their choice for county board chairman during a Sunday night caucus.

If the Democrats hang on to their 13-13 board split after Tuesday’s final election vote count, Brooks would most likely be the new county board chairman, replacing previous Republican Chairman Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort Township. Although Democrats and Republicans would be tied on the board, Democrat Larry Walsh, the Will County Executive, would cast tie-breaking votes. The board will be sworn in, reorganize and vote for new leaders on Dec. 3.
