Rep. Foster wants change in immigrant detention policy

Author: Editor

A Homeland Security mandate that requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain thousands of people a day costs a fortune and is holding up immigration reform, U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said Saturday.

The mandate, known as the detention bed quota, requires ICE to detain 34,000 people each day at a cost of $159 a person, Foster said. The bill to taxpayers runs $5.5 million a day or about $2 billion a year.

Legislature's tax, spending battle previews Rauner-Quinn clash

Between guns, gays and grass—not to mention pension reform—Illinois lawmakers have faced a lot of tough votes since the last election. Extending the temporary income tax hike may be one too many.

Meanwhile, his caucus has soundly rejected a doomsday budget calling for billions of dollars in cuts to grapple with the loss of revenue if income tax rates roll back next year.

Campaign 2014: A fight for power. Then what?

Author: Editor

What is this election about? So far it is all about power: who has it and who wants it, not necessarily what can or actually will be done with it.

Talk to any politician, administration official or strategist and they agree about the political climate right now. Obviously it’s bad for Democrats, given President Obama’s tepid approval ratings, the normal vagaries of midterm elections in the sixth year of a presidency and many competitive races in red states. That puts Obama’s party in danger of losing control of the Senate and colors everything the two parties are doing.
