Remap group pulls plug after judge's ruling

Author: Editor

A group that mounted a $3 million effort to ask voters this fall to take politics out of the redrawing of legislative boundaries dropped its effort Friday, hours after a Cook County judge tossed the proposed constitutional amendment from the Nov. 4 ballot.

Judge Mary Mikva’s ruling proved to be the death blow to the drive by the Yes for Independent Maps organization, which already had been under pressure to prove to the State Board of Elections that it had obtained nearly 300,000 valid signatures from voters to secure a fall ballot spot.

Courting trouble: Overcrowding and security concerns at Will County Courthouse

Author: Editor

If you live in the Will County part of Naperville and have been called for jury duty, you know the hassle that going to the Will County Courthouse can be at any time.

Long before the doors open at 8:30 a.m., people are lined up outside the Will County Courthouse in downtown Joliet. It takes awhile to get inside the building, through an outdated security system, and up one of four elevators to their destination.

The courthouse is a bustling building where thousands come to pay a traffic ticket, look up court cases, have a case tried by a judge or jury, seek an order of protection, get divorced or serve as a juror. Dealing with crowds and waiting in line is part of their visit here — but there are more issues for those who work here every day.

Governor Pat Quinn today was joined by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Union Pacific Railroad President and COO Lance Fritz to announce that the Union Pacific (UP) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) are making a significant investment in Metra’s West Line. Building world-class infrastructure is vital to a healthy economy and today’s investment will help get us there.”

As Will County Board member Walter Adamic, D-Joliet, aptly noted during a recent meeting, “The road to college can be a bumpy one.”

But Will County officials have teamed up with the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association and the village of University Park to make sure that students traveling along Stuenkel Road — aka University Parkway — have a less bumpy ride to Governors State University.
