Walsh defends role in Will Co. contract talks

“I have worked with the unions, stood up for the unions,” he said. “ ... I truly am disappointed, but, hey, I sit in this office. This is where the buck stops. I’ll accept the criticism. I try to represent everybody.”

About 25 members of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1028 picketed a political fundraiser Walsh held Wednesday night at Luxbar in Chicago. The fundraiser took place while contract talks resumed the same day, affecting about 1,000 county AFSCME workers who are threatening to strike.

During an interview in his office, Walsh defended his efforts during the 15 months of negotiations with Local 1028. He said his office and the county board, which has budgeting power, agreed to hire an expert labor negotiator from Laner Muchin, a Chicago law firm.
