Will County is serious about space problems

Author: Editor

The Will County Board is poised to start chipping away at its serious space shortage after more than a decade of debate.

With $14.3 million in existing funds, the county could soon start on a path toward $441 million in new buildings.

“We have a lot of cramped space and raggedy buildings, and things need to be done,” said board member Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet), chairwoman of the board’s capital improvements committee.

First Will County Board Meeting Brings Debate

Author: Editor
The first County Board meeting of the new year was met with awards to the community, a rebate from BMO Harris Bank, warm words about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and of course, a few spirited disagreements.
County Board Speaker Herbert Brooks brought up an amendment dealing with technical services between the Regional Transportation Authority and the county---an agreement that has been discussed among board members for some time---but this time, a change will be made to the dollar amount.

State Rep. Walsh reminds seniors of benefits available to them

Author: Editor

With the New Year in full swing, state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr. (D-Elwood) is encouraging local area seniors to apply for the benefits that are available to them through the state.

“As we continue working to rebuild our economy, it is important that senior citizens still receive vital services that they need,” Walsh said. “One of my top priorities as a representative is to ensure services that improve the health and well-being of senior citizens are protected in Springfield.”

Will County Board reorganization moved up to Monday

Author: Editor

A board reorganization meeting that was tentatively scheduled for Dec. 12 has been scratched.

Republican board members wanted the meeting held separately from the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected board, which is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday. The board’s executive committee, dominated by Republicans, including some lame-duck members, agreed to hold it Dec. 12.

But Democrats will have the edge on the new 26-member board once it’s seated. So County Executive Larry Walsh, a Democrat, stepped in Wednesday and called for the reorganization meeting to be at 11:30 a.m. Monday. Walsh has the power to call special meetings.
