Look who’s running: Will County Dem to challenge Judy Baar Topinka for Comptroller -

Author: Editor

Will County Auditor Duffy Blackburn — a Democrat — tells the Chicago Sun-Times he’s mounting a campaign for the office of Comptroller, positioning himself for a possible fight against Republican Judy Baar Topinka.

Assuming he wins the Democratic primary — should there be one — Blackburn will take on one of the few popular Republican statewide office holders.

Blackburn, who is in his second term as Will County Auditor, plans to jump in with the help of U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, who is to serve as a co-chair on his campaign.

Author: Editor

Will County Auditor Duffy Blackburn (D-Joliet) said he officially will throw his hat into the ring for Illinois Comptroller on Thursday and announce he’s seeking the Democratic nomination for the post.

That position is held by Judy Barr Topinka, the former state GOP chair who lost to Rod Blagojevich in 2006.

Editorial: Where's Sen. Kirk on immigration reform?

Author: Editor

New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte stuck her neck out over the weekend, declaring her support for the immigration reform bill that will hit the floor this week. That makes her the first Republican, outside of the bipartisan Gang of Eight that drafted the bill, to endorse the measure.

Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, where are you?

Kirk's name invariably appears on the short list of moderate Republican senators who could help provide the handful of votes necessary to defeat a filibuster. But he's still uncommitted.

Bill Daley to explore run for Illinois governor

Author: Editor

Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley plans to announce Tuesday that he's forming an exploratory committee as he weighs a Democratic primary challenge to Gov. Pat Quinn.

The move allows Daley to start raising money and not let the summer slip away as he waits to see whether he'll get a one-on-one matchup with Quinn in March. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan also is thinking about running for the Democratic governor nomination, but it's unclear when she'll make that decision. It's also uncertain whether Daley will stay in should Madigan join the fray.
